AGGRESSIVE PORTRAIT PROJECT
In March of 2020 I started a portrait project of painting "Hat Ladies". Those are African American Women who wear those beautiful hats. My goal is to paint twenty-five of these ladies wearing their favorite hat. As of June 6th, I completed fourteen.
WHY?
I saw a family in Lowes one day. The elder lady (probably "grandma") was wearing a beautiful hat. I watched and was mesmerized by the unique beauty facilitated by a hat. I missed getting her photo for a portrait. With the help of Charles Luster, curator, of the African American Heritage Museum, I was able to find women who were happy to share their stories and allow me to paint their portrait.
VIDEOS
I interview each lady to learn more about them, their backgrounds, and why they wear hats. I video tape these sessions, edit and produce one video on each lady. I have been amazed to learn their backgrounds and everyone have been "high achievers" overcoming many barriers and obstacles. You can watch these wonderful ladies on the videos by accessing this site.
HAT LADY SHOW AND RECEPTION
I am planning an art show in September, 2020, to display all twenty-five portraits and honor these amazing women. I have not yet finalized the date, time or location.
